Hotspot
In this hotspot Wi-Fi
architecture, wireless users in each hotspot are authenticated by the AG
and the backend RADIUS server (i.e., WiNOC)
residing in the WISP headquarter. Authentication is based on the Web redirection
technology as well. By Web redirection, WISP can force its
subscribers trying to wirelessly access the Internet to see online advertisements, so that
additional revenues are possible by selling advertisement spaces on
the Web page shown after successful authentication.
For a small hotspot, an AG with built-in AP functionality is enough
to provide full RF coverage in the venue. For a larger hotspot, several
APs may be needed to provide complete RF coverage.
If
the APs support the IEEE 802.3af PoE (Power over Ethernet) standard, power
can be supplied through Ethernet cables from a PoE hub/switch rather than
by alternate current (AC). Therefore, power cabling is not necessary; only
Ethernet cabling is needed. Thus cabling costs can be reduced. Another
benefit of employing PoE is when any AP hangs up due to firmware bugs, PoE
can be used to restart the AP.
